Collen Maswanganyi

In 2022, Collen Maswanganyi exhibited five low-relief sculptures as part of the exhibition Afropolitanism (7 May – 11 July) in NIROX’s Covered Space. Eager to develop this direction in his work, and to share knowledge with fellow woodcarvers, he embarked on a three-week collaborative workshop with Richard Chauke, Amorous Maswanganyi, and Ben Tuge, to produce new work and learn about the tools of the trade, from the conceptualisation, creation, and execution of new works, to their marketing, pricing and exhibition. The workshop will culminate in an exhibition of the same title, which will run from the 25 September – 30 October 2022.

  • Collen Maswanganyi was born on 17 January 1977 in Noblehoek, near Giyani, in Limpopo Province, South Africa. He began his education at Haaka Primary School in 1983. He passed his matric at two different schools, Ndengeza High School (1995) and N'wamavimbi High School (1996). Between 1996 and 1999, he obtained a Fine Arts Diploma at the Technicon Witwatersrand, after which he worked as a full-time artist. Just like his father, the acclaimed sculptor Johannes Maswanganyi, Collen works with wood, often applying paint to his works.
