Io Makandal

Interdisciplinary artist Io Makandal was in residence from 8 August – 8 September. During her residency she focused on a site-specific environmental response to the water crisis in the area of the Cradle of Humankind and NIROX, with a series of durational sculptural interventions. As an eco-feminist with a practice concerned with urban ecologies, these interventions functioned as extensions of her ongoing research in, and collaboration with, effective microbes (EMs) and ecological matter to effect a process of transformation and healing. During her stay she also created a new body of wall and installation-based works, for a solo exhibition at Kalashnikovv Gallery titled Frondescent (2023).
