EXHIBITION Small Things
SUPPORT Claire & Edoardo Villa WIll Trust
This four-day workshop was facilitated by resident artist Sophia van Wyk. It coincided with the exhibitions Small Things (2024–25) – which focused on how different artists exhibiting in the park approach the transition from a model or maquette to realising larger work – as well as Van Wyk’s solo exhibition Love Default (2024–25) in NIROX’s Covered Space.
Premised as an extension of these programmes, it introduced participants to some of the core concerns, marrying the former’s interest in maquette-making as an essential part of sculptural practice and the latter’s approach to the use of recycled waste and its theoretical concerns with the circular economy. To this end, the ten participants created their own maquettes from recycled waste (sourced on site) and concrete. Two of the exhibiting artists from Small Things, Nandipha Mntambo and Beth Diane Armstong, also spoke to participants about their own approaches to maquette-making.
