Sean Blem began his residency on 12 January. This is his third residency at NIROX. The first commenced in January 2014. Accordingly, his current residency serves as a ten year retrospective, of sorts. In his new works, wood from indigenous tree species is uniquely employed. Other elements are participant in his sculptures, though these remain largely hidden. References to previous series, and his body of work as a whole, remain strong. Nonetheless, the new works build on those created in the past, exploring a different intimacy and interrelation to the environment than his earlier works.

  • Born 1969 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, lives and works in Zurich. He studied at Parsons School of Design Paris and the ENSBA. Between 1990 and 2024 his work was exhibited in public spaces around the world. He is engaged in Long-term projects, each combining in-depth research with the production of artefacts: works on paper, photography, text, painting and sculpture. These projects are ongoing oeuvres.
