Facilitated by Gordon Froud in December 2025, the aim of this two-week workshop was to enable both practicising artists and students interested in working with wood as a medium, to learn more about woodworking and construction as a methodology, extending the knowledge of practicing artists and students by learning about carpentry, joinery, and other specialised techniques. To this end, participants spent the first four days in discussion, with demonstrations outlining how to use the various machines and tools in the Centre’s workshop. These included a bandsaw, electric planes, lathes, routers, sanders, and table saw. It also included safety demonstrations as a guide for the correct use of machinery and tools. Wood enthusiasts from the carpentry and woodworking fraternity were engaged to share their skills; skills that are being lost as people rely on factory manufactured wooden furniture and fittings. None of the students had worked with wood as a medium before, and few had learned about construction, joinery, joining, and detailed cabinetmaking. Each afternoon, participants would extend their learning through practice and making. The second week was spent designing and making work, with the view towards a group exhibition at NIROX in 2026, and in a solo exhibition of work by Gordon Froud that extends his exploration of electrical pylons.
